A 38-year-old government hospital staff nurse was stabbed and then shot twice by burglars after she resisted their attempt at her house at Cellseeni Colony in Thoothukudi on Thursday morning.

Though she managed to foil their bid to loot the house, the duo escaped with an 11-sovereign chain after grievously injuring her.

Police said that Susila (37) was alone at her house when a two-member gang of burglars barged into the house. Susila’s husband Sivanandham, a crane operator with a private shipping company, had left for work and her 13-year-old son had gone to school.  The duo entered the house around 9.15 am and stabbed Susila before snatching her gold chain. When Susila resisted their efforts to snatch the bureau keys from her, they fired two rounds at her using a country-made gun.

A bullet wound on her throat rendered her incapable of raising an alarm. Despite this, Susila walked around 200 metres to reach her brother-in-law Mariselvan’s house for help. Mariselvan, a head constable attached to Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police office, rushed her to the GH and informed the police.

Doctors said that Susila had sustained bullet injuries on the left cheek and left side of the throat.

Meanwhile, Nagarajan, Sivanandham’s younger brother, said, “My brother had seen two persons standing near the gate. As he was in a hurry, he did not take serious note of them.”

Tirunelveli Inspector General of Police Sumit Saran and Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police M Durai inspected the spot. A case was registered.
