A criminal case has been registered against AIADMK MP Thambidurai for allegedly threatening a DMK worker in connection with the December four byelection to the Yeracaud Assembly constituency.

The case was registered yesterday against Thambidurai and some AIADMK workers under IPC sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (1) (punishment for criminal intimidation), Inspector Sivakumar said.

DMK worker Prasanth had complained that Thamidurai threatened and assaulted him after he reported to the election officer about some feasts being allegedly organised.

This is the first time a case has been registered against AIADMK after the bypoll was announced on October 4.

Police said former DMK minister E V Velu and some DMK workers were booked a couple of days ago for allegedly verbally abusing and threatening AIADMK MLA S P Velumani while campaigning. A case was registered under IPC sections including 341.

The DMK has accused the ruling AIADMK of violating the model code of conduct and has lodged complaints with the Election Commission of India.

Arch rivals DMK and AIADMK are locked in a bitter battle in the bypoll, which was necessitated following the death of AIADMK's C Perumal. DMK's V Maran and AIADMK's P Saroja, Perumal's wife, are in the fray.
