Hilsa Fish Floods Yanam Market

PUDUCHERRY: People of Yanam region who love to have fish, especially of the Pulasa variety, can have them to their heart’s content as Pulasas have arrived at the market here in plenty.

According to information, Pulasa (Hilsa) fish is found in the River Godavari during the flooding season from July to September every year. The fish is popular for its taste and the ‘Pulasa Pulusu’, a special dish, prepared with tamarind and masala, ismuch sought after.

The scientific name of Pulasa is Hilsa ilisha. The fish swims against the current of the flood waters in Godavari from Bay of Bengal. During the journey, the fish becomes bigger in size and gains in weight. The fish reaches the region for breeding in the River Godavari after which it returns to the sea. During the search for a breeding ground, these fish get caught in the nets of the fishermen of Yanam, Dowleswaram, Bhadrachalam etc.

According to sources, Hilsa fish’s net sale amounts to about `one crore at the Yanam market every year, during the season.

The female fish, which carries eggs, is much in demand and the eggs made into curry is what every fish-eater wants to relish.
