COIMBATORE: Not checking the credentials of a man representing a bogus firm before taking up a job offer landed a city engineer in serious trouble as he was duped of `2 lakh and left stranded at a Thailand shopping mall since last Friday.

The matter came to light when the father of the engineer, T K Rangasamy, a resident of Thottipalayam in Vellamadai on the outskirts of the city, petitioned the District Revenue Officer K Karpagam on Monday seeking his son’s safe repatriation. Rangasamy in his petition said that his son, R Goutham, had been working with a city-based private firm for the past one-and-a-half years after completing his engineering. Recently, he sent his resume to some recruitment agencies seeking a job abroad.

Based on Goutham’s resume, a man named Ganesan claiming to be the HR manager of a Thailand-based firm contacted him. Ganesan reportedly offered Goutham a post in the company and demanded `2 lakh as commission.

Lured by the offer, Goutham arranged for the money and landed in Thailand on Friday morning.

Goutham had paid for the ticket from his own pocket, claimed his sister Kavitha. “Ganesan had told Goutham to bring his commission with him. As he was claiming to be a HR manager and was very convincing, Goutham fell in his trap,” she added.

“Ganesan received Goutham at the airport. After taking money, he told Goutham to wait at a shopping mall till he came back with the offer letter. When he failed to turn up, Goutham tried calling him on his mobile. However, there was no response. It has been four days since he has been stranded there,” Rangasamy said.

Urging the district administration to take steps to bring back his son, Rangasamy demanded action against Ganesan for cheating Goutham.
