Toddler Run Over by School Van in Ariyalur

Two-and-a-half-year-old crawls under van while mother ties shoe lace for his brother

TIRUCHY: In a gruesome accident, a two-and-half-year-old boy was crushed to death under the wheels of a school van on Thursday, as he accompanied his mother to send his elder brother off to school near Senthurai in Ariyalur district.

According to police, the couple Rajiv Gandhi, a farmer of Idaiyakurichi village near Senthurai and Seethalakhsmi, had two children, R Raghul Gandhi (4) and the other, a two-and- half-year-old child, R Vettrivel.

While Rajiv was away in his field on Thursday morning, Seethalakhsmi went to Senthurai main road and was waiting with her two children for the school van to send Raghul, a LKG student, to school.

As the school van came, Seethalakhsmi noticed that one of Raghul’s shoes was not properly tied. So, she set to tie the shoe lace properly, While doing so, she failed tot notice that Vettrivel, her younger son had playfully crawled underneath the school van.

Within a flash, the kid was run over by the van and crushed to death instantly, as the van driver Balamurugan (60) of Kuvaham, had moved the vehicle not knowing the kid was under the van.

On information, police personnel attached to Kuvaham police station rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the van crew had not properly followed instructions of the transport department. Subsequently, police arrested Balamurugan and Murugan (28), cleaner of the van. A case was registered.
