PUDUCHERRY:JIPMER is working towards starting the Karaikal Medical College by next academic year with an intake of 100 students. A committee is working towards drafting a new curriculum, along with infrastructure and and manpower development, said Dr S C Parija, director of the institution.
Speaking after inspecting a site in Karaikal on Tuesday, Parija said the new college would function from a temporary campus initially. To begin with, the college is likely to function from the three-storied building constructed by Puducherry government for a nursing college or from the Government General Hospital in Karaikal. Besides, the newly constructed Pondicherry Housing Board building could be made available for providing hostel facilities.
A 40-acre site at Kovilpattu on the Karaikal-Pillai Theruvasal link road, acquired by Puducherry government for establishing a super speciality hospital, has been earmarked for establishing the JIPMER-Karaikal campus.
The site was inspected by Dr Parija along with JIPMER Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr K V Raman, and Karaikal Collector E Vallavan. Though the site is suitable, JIPMER has sought 100 acres of land, said Dr Parija.
The district administration has also indicated that more land could be acquired to meet the requirement.
Will ask for 50 pc Reservation: CM
Karaikal: CM Rangaswamy said the UT government would press for 50 per cent reservation in the upcoming offsite campus of JIPMER in Karaikal for UT students. He was in Karaikal to attend a review meeting held on Tuesday to ascertain development activities in Karaikal. He said close to 25 percent of funds allotted for development in Karaikal have been spent.
Demonstration of Cleft Lip Surgery
Puducherry: Cleft surgeries were demonstrated to residents of surgery, ENT and Speech Therapy by Dr R K Chittoria and Dr D P Mohapatra the surgeons at JIPMER as part of the Smile Train Cleft Awareness week. A lecture was presented by Dr Ravi Kumar Chittoria, Head of Plastic Surgery.
