COIMBATORE:Pollachi AWPS police have lodged a case against the husband and mother-in-law of a woman who poured kerosene on her body and set herself afire at her house in Kuppusamy Layout, Palladam Road, Pollachi on Wednesday.

M Rajalakshmi (27) married G Muralidharan (27), working as an appraiser at a private bank in Negamam, in July, 2012. The couple had an 18-month-old son.

Around 10 months ago, they moved out of the house where they were staying with Muralidharan’s parents. In her statement to the police, Rajalakshmi said that her husband was an alcoholic and her mother-in-law, G Ranganayaki (64), used to torment her with threats.

On the fateful day, Muralidharan had taken their son to Ranganayaki’s house, after which he consumed alcohol and returned home late. Rajalakshmi wanted to “scare” Muralidharan. She doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire. She was rushed to CMCH from where she was referred to a private hospital on Friday.
