CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Monday sought an assistance of Rs 22,573 crore from the Central government to undertake reconstruction works in areas affected by cyclone Vardah and reiterated the demand for an ‘on account’ grant of Rs 1,000 crore for immediate requirements.

The Chief Minister met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s residence in Delhi and submitted a 142-page memorandum to him.

He also handed over a copy of the resolution adopted by Tamil Nadu Cabinet recently recommending the Bharat Ratna award for former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in recognition of her services to the nation.

Besides, Panneerselvam also requested that a life-size bronze statue of Jayalalithaa be unveiled at Parliament complex.

The Chief Minister reiterated the demand for the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Regulatory Committee to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, given in 2007.

When speaking to the press, Panneerselvam evaded a question on the request of AIADMK leaders that VK Sasikala should assume the office of Chief Minister too, apart from taking over as general secretary of the AIADMK.
