Express News Service

TIRUNELVELI: As honour killing continues to raise its ugly head with an alarming frequency, a Nellai youth has made a short film, giving a peep into the mindset that bays for blood against inter-caste love.

Titled, Kuriyeedu (Sign), the 30-minute film shows how even the girl’s mother is playing an active role in apprehending the eloping duo. “I have studied recent cases of honour killing and took the film. Usually, the boy gets killed. But, here I have shown the youth repulsing the attack,” says M Vinoth, the 29-year-old aspiring film-maker.

Shot in the backdrop of the dry hilly terrain at Muthur near Palayamkottai in the district, the film has as the lead actors two visual communication students of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. While Kathirvel plays the role of Chezhian, the boy, Vasugi portrays that of Megalai, the girl.

The narrative begins with Chezhian and Megalai discussing about eloping to tie the knot after her family comes to know of their love. The two proceed in a two-wheeler only to be followed by the girl’s family. Megalai’s mother, smoking a cigar, is also in the car accompanied by her husband and son. They intercept the lovers and thrash the boy. After confining Megalai in the car, they return with weapons to attack Chezhian. By then, he regains and searches for Megalai and meets the family midway. Chezhian rescues her. They meet a mentally depressed woman who saves the lovers. The film will be screened on Wednesday.
