CHENNAI: DMK leader M K Stalin paid a surprise visit to Apollo Hospitals on Saturday on the instructions of the opposition party's chief M Karunanidhi and wished the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa a speedy recovery.

“We met Finance Minister O Panneerselvam and Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar besides Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha, M Thambidurai.  They told us that the Chief Minister has been improving well. On behalf of DMK President M Karunanidhi and the party, we wish her a speedy recovery and resume her official duties soon," Stalin said after a 20-minute visit from the hospital around 7.30 pm.

He was accompanied by his deputy in the Assembly, Durai Murugan and former Minister K Ponmudi.

Meanwhile, a bulletin from the Apollo Hospitals, where Jayalalithaa was admitted for past 16 days, said she is under constant monitoring of intensivists and consultants.

"The respiratory support is closely watched and adjusted. Lungs decongestion treatment is being continued," the statement said.

A host of party leaders too visited the hospital on Saturday including MDMK general secretary Vaiko, BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan, CPM State secretary G Ramakrishnan and Puthiya Thamizhagam president K Krishnasamy.

Vaiko, subsequently meeting the Acting Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, rubbished the demands for appointing an interim Chief Minister.

“Did anyone make such demand when former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi remained bed-ridden for many days at SRMC," he asked.
