KMDK woos DMK for local body polls

Express News Service

CHENNAI: Following the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) is wooing the DMK to have a truck with it for the upcoming local body polls in the state.

The general secretary of KMDK, E R Eswaran, after receiving positive signals, visited DMK treasurer MK Stalin at his residence in Alwarpet here on Wednesday. Entry of the Kongu party is expected to boost the winning prospects of the DMK in civic bodies in western region where the Dravidian major could win only a few seats in the  May 16 Assembly polls. “During my discussion with the Leader of Opposition, I pointed out the results of 15 of the seats where we scored better in the Assembly polls. Had we been with the DMK, the alliance could have won all these segments,” Eswaran told Express. He noted that his party contested 72 Assembly segments and polled 1. 70 lakh votes.

Referring to the alliance talks, the KMDK leader stated that Stalin assured him of getting back after consulting his party leadership.

The parent party of KMDK, the Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam (KMK), contested the 2011 Assembly polls in the company of DMK but could not win a single seat. Later, Eswaran floated the KMDK breaking away from KMK. Since both the Dravidian majors were not inclined to have a truck with the regional outfit, KMDK had to go it alone and secured 0.4 per cent vote share, sources said.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president S Thirunavukkarasar met MK Stalin at his residence on Wednesday evening. He said civic body poll was discussed during the meeting.
