CHENNAI: Several parts of the State received good rainfall during the 24-hour period ending on Wednesday morning. The meteorological department expects fairly widespread rainfall in the next two days as well. While Maduranthagam (Kancheepuram district) saw the heaviest rainfall (15 cm), Pullambadi in Tiruchy district (14), Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district (13), Vadipatti in Madurai district (12) and Chinnakalar in Coimbatore district (11) got good precipitation. S Balachandran, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, said the rainfall was due to a trough of wind, running from north to south Tamil Nadu along the lower part of the atmosphere.
“This helps in rise of warm air leading to convectional activity and eventually precipitation,” he said. The good spell of rainfall in the last few days has helped lift the State, which was in the deficient category, into near ‘normal’ levels for the current season. As on Wednesday, the State has received 117.8 mm rain, compared to the normal amount of 119.3 mm.
“There was deficiency for large parts of southwest monsoon season, which started in June. But, we are now in a much better position,” he said. Chennai too received its share of rainfall on Wednesday. The Nungambakkam weather station recorded 1.5 cm over and above 1 cm of overnight rains. It led to a drop in maximum temperature by 1 degree Celsius from normal. The city is likely to have cloudy skies on Thursday, with the possibility of rain or thundershowers.
