CHENNAI: The HC has directed the Government to answer how long it will take to recruit 4 lakh teachers who will be graduating from various teacher training institutions (TTIs) in the State by the end of 2018.

Justice N Kirubakaran issued the directive when a writ petition from the Tiruchy-based SVI College of Education came up before him on Thursday. The petition challenged the refusal to increase the student intake for BEd and MEd courses.

The southern regional committee of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had issued a notice to the institution saying its application would be rejected if it insisted on permission for both the courses. When the matter came up today, the counsel for the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University informed the judge that by the end of 2015-18 the number of students who would be awarded degrees would be about four lakh.
