PUDUCHERRY: Rich tributes were paid to nationalist poet Subramania Bharathi on his 135th birth anniversary here today.

Puducherry Welfare Minister M Kandasamy, Deputy Speaker V P Sivakolundhi and ruling Congress MLAs were among those who paid homage at the revolutionary poet's statue.

Bharathi had his political sojourn in the Union Territory for eleven years from 1910 when it was under the French regime.

Popularly known as 'Mahakavi Bharathi,' he was a zealous freedom fighter, journalist and social reformer.

The territorial government has acquired the house where the poet lived during his stay in Puducherry and converted it into a Research cum Literary centre.
