VELLORE: Sagadevan, a murder convict, reportedly escaped from the Vellore Central Jail in the early hours of Thursday by scaling the compound wall using a long cloth. This is the same prison where three of the Rajiv Gandhi assassin convicts are imprisoned.

Prison officials said they noticed a long cloth on a high-rise compound wall around 6 am. When they were combing the area, they spotted Sagadevan running at a distance. Attempts to catch him were futile.

The fugitive, Sagadevan, a resident of Chinnakandhili in Tirupattur, Vellore district, was arrested in October on charges of murdering an elderly woman while attempting to rob a gold chain she was wearing. He was arrested by the Kandhili police and was remanded in the prison under judicial custody.

The police have formed special teams to trace and nab Sagadevan.
