CHENNAI: A writ plea for a direction to the Election Commission to appoint an independent officer to conduct inner-party polls to elect the general secretary and for consequential orders prohibiting the self-appointed general secretary and others who helped such secretary to assume office from taking decisions, has been made in Madras High Court.

Justice M Sathyanarayanan, before whom the petition from former AIADMK MP KC Palanisamy came up for hearing on Thursday, posted the same for Friday (February 10) for deciding its maintainability.

According to petitioner, VK Sasikala has been elected as general secretary of the party in violation of Rule 20 of the party by-laws, on December 29. Her election was contrary to all accepted canons of democracy. The general council was never authorised to take such a decision, which has a far-reaching effect and which is likely to trample the democratic process, petitioner contended.

He had sent a representation dated January 20 to the Election Commission, New Delhi, but there was no response. Hence, the present petition for a direction to the EC to act on his representation.
