CHENNAI: Caretaker Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Wednesday promised a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of Supreme Court into the circumstances surrounding the death of his predecessor J Jayalalithaa.
Doubts about the nature of her ailment and her last days at the hospital have been raised by rivals of AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala, ranging from Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Madhavan to party veteran PH Pandian.
On Wednesday, a doctor who had treated Jayalalithaa, too wondered whether appropriate treatment protocol was followed. Announcing his plans to set up the inquiry commission during an interaction with reporters at his official residence on Wednesday, Panneerselvam noted that doctors who had treated Jayalalithaa earlier have now raised doubts about the procedures of treatment.
“Because of this, doubts have again crept into the minds of the people. So, the inquiry commission would bring out the truth,” he added.
To a question whether he was considering withdrawing his resignation, he said, “If necessary, I will withdraw the resignation.” Stating that the people wanted someone with better credentials to become the chief minister, he said he has the responsibility to fulfil their “aspirations”.
