VILLUPURAM: Former DMK minister K Ponmudi’s Pongal celebration in which he danced with supporters on stage at his native T Edaiyar village near here has gone viral on social media on Monday.

In the video, the enthusiastic dhoti-clad legislator from Thirukovilur, is seen dancing with supporters.
However, this has not gone down well with the drought-hit farmers in the region who are yet to recover from crop loss.

According to farmers’ association members, as many as 1099 villages in Villupuram district, accounting for 75 per cent of the population, are dependent upon agriculture and related activities. They said this year’s drought was the most severe in the last 40 years.

Ponmudi said he had visited over 15 villages to extend greetings. “At my native village, people pushed me on the stage out of affection. Music was played, including the Parai, and I obliged by dancing for a few seconds,” he said.
