CHENNAI: Just a few hours after the State Assembly unanimously passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Monday ‘reserved’ it for the consideration of the President. The Bill was tabled to replace the Ordinance promulgated by the Governor on Jan 21.

A Raj Bhavan release said the Bill adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly will be repugnant to the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 which is an earlier law on a concurrent subject - prevention of cruelty to animals.

“Hence, the Bill after its passage in the legislative Assembly has to be reserved by the Governor for the consideration of the President under Article 254 (2) of the Constitution. Accordingly, the Governor reserved the Bill for the consideration of the President,” the release added.
