CHENNAI: Opposing the milestone markings in Hindi, DMK working president MK Stalin warned of ‘new’ anti-Hindi protests if Centre continued to favour Hindi at the expense of other languages.

Express on Tuesday reported that markings on milestones in English were being replaced with Hindi in Vellore and Krishnagiri. In a statement, Stalin said it showed BJP’s disrespect to the sentiments of Tamils and their backdoor attempt to bring in Hindi hegemony in Tamil Nadu.

Urging the Centre to halt replacing English signages with Hindi, Stalin wanted the Centre to treat all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution equally and recalled former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s assurance that English would continue to be used until non-Hindi speaking people wanted it.

PMK founder S Ramadoss too threatened to launch a massive agitation if the Centre failed to drop its latest attempt to replace English signages with Hindi.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condemned the move.
