CHENNAI: Three of a family who were found charred to death in a car on Saturday hailed from Palakkad district in Kerala and had settled in Chennai.

Divya Shree, an ME graduate, got married to Sarth Chandran in December last. She had come to Chennai just four days ago, to stay with her parents R Jayadevan, 55, and J Ramadevi, 48, for a few days. Jayadevan was reportedly working as a consulting auditor for companies.

Police say they found the car’s doors jammed but aren’t sure how it caught fire. “There is no clarity on this. The car was found about 60 ft away from the East Coast Road. We are investigating all angles. It’s too early to comment,” said an investigating officer.

Police said a security guard tried to break the window glass and save the people inside, but none could go near it because of the intense heat.
The Thirukazhukundram fire and rescue service received a call around 8.50 pm and put out the fire by around 9.15 pm. Police said that by the time they reached the spot, the car and the bodies were charred.
“Once the fire was put out, all we could see inside the car was skulls and bones.

“The only thing we could ascertain was that there were three people,” said a police officer. Only after they managed to decipher the car’s number plate, the police were able to make a break through in identifying the family.
