CHENNAI: Health minister C Vijaya Basker held a dengue awareness meeting with the State drug controller and chemists and pharmacists’associations at the Government Multi Super-Speciality Hospital at Omandurar Estate on Thursday. He sought control on over-the-counter drugs sales and advised the associations to sensitise people on this.

“The health minister gave instructions not to sell drugs to private doctors without written request and also ask them to make payment through cheque so as to establish the bona fide of the doctor. This will help prevent drug flow to quacks. Pharmacists were also advised not to give drugs without prescription,” an official from the Drug Controllerate said.

Speaking to reporters, the minister said a GO has been issued to conduct death audit in private hospitals. The committee will soon come out with the report.

According to a press release, the department has so far taken action against 798 quacks across the State.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated the Aedes mosquito eradication programme at schools. Students of St Anne’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Royapuram, were given awareness training on dengue at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital.

The health department had already announced that every Thursday will be observed as Aedes Mosquito Eradication Day.
