CHENNAI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has ordered the allocation of Rs 200 crore to ensure regular supply of drinking water to rural and urban areas in the State during May and June. Of the total sum, RS 50 crore will be earmarked for rural areas, Rs 120 crore for municipal and urban areas, Rs 14 crore for town panchayats and Rs 16 crore for Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Palaniswami, who held a high-level meeting with top officials and senior ministers on Tuesday to review the situation, directed the authorities concerned to devise projects for rain water harvesting and water recycling.The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board was instructed to ensure supply of water to areas where piped supply could not be pumped.

The Chief Minister also directed Agriculture department officials to speed up disbursal of insurance cover for farmers in places where the same had not been distributed. Monitoring officers told to visit dists With a view to advising district Collectors, the already nominated monitoring officers, in the rank of senior IAS officers, were asked to visit their respective districts next week to take stock of the situation.Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Agriculture mnister R Doraikannu, Revenue and Disaster Management mnister RB Udhayakumar and Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan were among those who participated in the meeting.
