Tamil Nadu government widens scope of inquiry panel into police firing in Thoothukudi

Originally, the commission was asked to inquire into the causes and circumstances leading to the opening of fire resulting in death and injuries to persons on May 22 at Thoothukudi.

CHENNAI: The State government has widened the scope of inquiry of the Inquiry Commission headed by retired justice Aruna Jegadeesan into the police firing in Thoothukudi on May 22. Orders in this regard have been issued on July 4.

Originally, the commission was asked to inquire into the causes and circumstances leading to the opening of fire resulting in death and injuries to persons on May 22 at Thoothukudi including damage to public and private properties.

Now, the government has amended the above terms of reference empowering the Commission to enquire into the subsequent events at Thoothukudi after the police firing and nearby areas including damages to public and private properties.

An official release here said the general public and victims can furnish the facts and information known to them either directly or indirectly through authorized person or representative to the commission on or before July 27.

The sworn affidavits (1+2 copies) or petition may be submitted in person or by post either to Government Bungalow NCB 28, P.S.Kumarasamy Raja Road, (Greenways Road), Chennai-200 028 or to the Camp Office at Government Old Circuit House, South Beach Road, Thoothukudi.
