CHENNAI: The first bench of the Madras High Court has held that the authorities concerned may admit students in the medical colleges run by the Deemed to be Universities in the State and the Union Territory of Puducherry by collecting Rs 13 lakh only for management quota until the UGC fee fixation committee finalises a sum.
“We are informed that the (UGC) fee committee has earlier fixed Rs 11.50 lakh for management quota for the medical colleges run by the Deemed Universities and the students may now be admitted subject to payment of Rs 13 lakh,” the bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P T Asha said on Friday. Once the fee committee determines the fee and the same is found to be higher than Rs 13 lakh per annum, the students will have to remit the balance.
Similarly, if the fee is less than Rs 13 lakh, the differential amount shall be refunded to the students, the bench said. The bench was passing further interim orders on a 2017 PIL petition from Jawaharlal Shanmugam praying for a directive to the State Health Secretary and the Fee Fixation Committee to fix tuition fee structure for medical courses offered by colleges of Deemed Universities.
