CHENNAI: A team headed by Director of Medical Services M R Enbaseackaran conducted inquiry on Wednesday at a private hospital in Adyar regarding allegations of irregularities in harvesting organs of a deceased person in a hospital at Salem recently.
Speaking to Express, a senior health department official said “It was part of the inquiry that the officials are conducting in various private hospitals here regarding an allegation that a family from Kerala was forced to donate organs of a family member who was declared brain dead at Vinayaka Mission Super Speciality Hospital (VIMS) in Salem”.
Meanwhile, a source in the private hospital confirmed to Express that the DMS team visited the hospital for inquiry related to organ transplant issues on Wednesday. But, the hospital source denied that it was connected to Salem case.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had written to his Tamil Nadu counterpart Edappadi K Palaniswami last month urging him to order a probe into the complaint lodged by the family members of P Manikanan (24) from Palakkad district.
Manikandan met with an accident along with six other near Kallakurichi in Villupuram district on May 18. They were admitted to VIMS. On May 20, doctors declared Manikandan brain dead and subsequently his organs-kidneys, corneas, liver, intestines, pancreas,heart and lungs were harvested and shared with various hospitals, including two private hospitals in Chennai.
