CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has amended the maternity leave rule in such a way that it will now allow women government employees to seek maternity leave during their second pregnancy even if they had given birth to twins in the first delivery.

In November 2016, when the State government extended the period of maternity leave from six to nine months, it said woman employees “with less than two surviving children” were eligible for availing this leave.

Through a GO on June 20, the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department made changes to the maternity leave rule 101(a) and announced on Friday that a mother of twins can still avail maternity leave for her next pregnancy. Ever since maternity leave was extended, many working mothers of twins have filed petitions in the Madras High Court and have been granted leave for their second delivery.
