CHENNAI : The Madras High Court has directed the Vaniambadi Municipal Commissioner and the Executive Engineer/WFO/PWD of Upper Palar Basin Division in Vellore to hold a joint inspection with the Municipal Engineer, Highways Engineer/Project and Railways for construction of a road under bridge (RUB) at Vaniambadi level-crossing No. 81.

A division bench of Justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad gave the directive, while passing orders on a PIL petition from Madurai Farook Ahmed of Khaderpet at Vaniambadi, last week.The PIL prayed for a directive to the authorities concerned to expedite construction of the RUB at the level-crossing. However, if the project is delayed due to administrative or technical reasons, re-opening of the level-crossing till then should be ordered, petitioner said.

Petitioner’s counsel B Ramprasath submitted there was enormous delay in construction of the RUB due to water-logging and lethargy on the part of the local bodies. The bench suo motu impleaded two officials – Vaniambadi Municipal Commissioner and the Executive Engineer, Upper Palar Basin Division in Vellore – as parties to the PIL and directed them to hold a joint inspection with others within two weeks to alleviate the sufferings of the local people.
