CHENNAI: Ousted DMK leader and party president MK Stalin's brother MK Alagiri led a peace rally to pay homage to his late father M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Wednesday.

The rally began from near the Triplicane police station. Alagiri led it in an open van. It took about 90 minutes for him to reach Karunanidhi's memorial on Marina beach.

He was accompanied by family members, Kayalvizhi, daughter, and Durai Dhayanidhi, son.

A former DMK MLA AG Sampath was prominent among those attending the event.

After paying his respects to his father, Alagiri told reporters, "The rally is held to pay homage to Kalaignar and with no other intention."

When questioned about the removal of a party functionary who had welcomed him at Airport, he asked if the party can remove all the 1.50 lakh persons attending the rally.

Alagiri preferred to stay silent about his future plans. Sources said that he has given an ultimatum to Stalin for reinstatement; if that fails, then Alagiri will make his plans public.

Most of the men who turned up for the rally were from southern districts, particularly from Madurai. Alagiri was stated to be overwhelmed by the turnout.
