Three killed in stone quarry accident in Tamil Nadu

The accident is believed to have happened due to some spark in the explosive store room inside the quarry in Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district, when the workers unloaded the materials.

VIRUDHUNAGAR: In a gruesome incident three workers were killed and several others were injured at a private blue metal quarry at Aaviyur village near Kariyapatti in Virudhunagar district on Wednesday.

According to sources the accident is believed to have happened due to some spark in the explosive store room inside the quarry when the workers unloaded the materials (used to break the blue metal).

Three workers were killed on the spot whose details are yet to be ascertained. A few more are believed to be injured in the accident. The fire and rescue service personnel and policemen are engaged in the rescue operation.

The quarry, owned by Sethu, is said to have a valid license. Following the accident, the residents in the locality staged a dharna to permanently close the quarry.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and said that solatium would be provided to the kin of the deceased after obtaining permission from the ECI. Meanwhile, pointing to the frequent cracker blasts in the district, Opposition leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami slammed the state government for failing to take necessary measures to prevent such accidents, which have been claiming the lives of innocent people.
