MADURAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin will be in Madurai on Sunday to roll out a slew of development initiatives across the district including the inauguration of the ‘Veeramangai Velu Nachiyar Flyover’.
Stalin, who landed in the city late on Saturday, received a grand welcome from DMK cadre who had lined up along the airport road to greet him.
According to a statement from the district collectorate, the CM will inaugurate 63 completed projects executed at a total cost of Rs 2,630.88 crore. He will also lay foundation stones for seven new works worth Rs 17.17 crore. A total of 1,41,049 beneficiaries will be handed over welfare assistance, including land pattas for 63,698 people under the Revenue and Disaster Management Department and government benefits for 77,351 beneficiaries across multiple departments.
A key highlight of the visit will be the opening of the newly constructed Melamadai flyover. Built at a cost of Rs 150.28 crore, the 950-metre-long structure has been named ‘Veeramangai Velu Nachiyar Flyover’ in honour of the warrior queen who defied the British rule and reclaimed Sivaganga. The stretch connecting the Anna Bus Stand and Melamadai Junction to the Ring Road enroute to Poovandhi is expected to see a major reduction in congestion once traffic is diverted via the flyover.
The corridor has long faced gridlocks due to heavy vehicle movement and the presence of several educational institutions. Later in the day, Stalin is slated to participate in the ‘IDA Scudder Investment Summit’, during which 91 MoUs are expected to be signed. The CM will lay foundation stones for new projects at the Kalaignar Grounds in Uthangudi, and inaugurate completed schemes, including the Periyar Drinking Water Project on the SIPCOT campus.
