COIMBATORE: The negligence of the Directorate of Collegiate Education (DCE) in not appointing teaching faculty has affected Computer Science students at the Government Arts College at Dharapuram in Tiruppur district. Students have accused the DCE of not appointing a single teaching faculty for first year B.Sc Computer Science students, launched this academic year.
As a result, two students obtained transfer certificate (TC) from the college.
A girl student who obtained TC from the college on September 29 told TNIE that since June, students have not learned anything from the Computer Science stream in the first semester, as not a single teaching faculty has been appointed.
She said only Mathematics, Tamil and English are being taught, adding that she waited for a Computer Science faculty.
"With the Bharathiar University semester exams beginning soon, how can we write the Computer Science exam without learning the fundamentals? I lost hope and obtained a TC considering my education," she said.
"I joined the same course at LRG Government College in Tiruppur, which forces me to travel around 40 km. Dharapuram college is just 10 km from my area," she rued.
According to college sources, another male student also obtained a TC recently and joined another government college. Following the girl’s footsteps, more students are planning to leave the college.
As officers failed to appoint a teaching faculty for the Computer Science programme, students have suffered academically, with some coming to college but returning without learning. The officers also failed to deploy a teaching faculty from other colleges, sources added.
Coimbatore Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, N Shenbagalakshmi, told TNIE that the DCE has taken steps to recruit guest lecturers, and once the process is completed, faculty will be appointed to the college soon.
