DSP, six cops shunted for supporting illegal lottery in TN's Chidambaram

The inquiry confirmed that certain police personnel had received money and provided assistance to the lottery dealer.

CUDDALORE: Several police officers, including a deputy superintendent of police, inspector and sub-inspector, were transferred to Vellore district following allegations of supporting lottery dealers in Chidambaram.

Recently, a special police team arrested a lottery dealer in Chidambaram. Police sources said, “During interrogation, the person revealed that senior police officials had been extending support to his illegal lottery business. Based on the information, North Zone Inspector General of Police Asra Garg ordered an inquiry by a special police team that camped in Chidambaram for the past five days.”

The inquiry confirmed that certain police personnel had received money and provided assistance to the lottery dealer. Following this, Chidambaram DSP D Augustin Joshua Lamech, Chidambaram town Inspector S Rameshbabu, Sub-Inspector Baranidharan, Special Sub-Inspector Natarajan, Head Constables Ganesan and Gopalakrishnan, and Special Branch Constable Karthik were transferred to Vellore district.

Constable suspended

In another incident, a grade-I constable from Neyveli Nagar police station, Raja, was suspended for a hit-and-run accident case on the night of August 28 which led to the death of a woman.

According to sources, Raja was driving a car on Panruti-Kumbakonam road when he hit Govindarasu and his wife Thangamani who were riding a two-wheeler.

Raja sped away despite the public trying to stop his vehicle. Thangamani sustained severe injuries and died at JIPMER hospital, Puducherry.

Govindarasu is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit. The Kadampuliyur police registered a case and during investigation, found that Raja had acted in an inappropriate manner and brought disrepute to the department.

Cuddalore District Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar issued an order on Wednesday suspending Raja from service.
