CHENNAI: The TVK government's maiden Budget has left out several high-profile infrastructure and urban development projects that were expected to feature in its long-term growth strategy, signalling a stronger emphasis on welfare spending over new capital-intensive initiatives.
Among the notable omissions are the proposed Parandur greenfield airport, Hosur airport, Rameswaram airport, Hosur TIDEL Park, Chennai Global City, Chennai Tech City, Hosur Knowledge Corridor, Chennai Sports City, and the long-discussed proposal to increase the Floor Space Index (FSI) to spur urban redevelopment.
The omission is significant because many of these projects had been projected as catalysts for attracting investment, expanding industrial capacity, and supporting Tamil Nadu's ambition of becoming a $1.5 trillion economy.
Their absence from the Budget suggests that the government may defer major policy decisions and capital commitments to a later stage, even as it rolls out an expansive welfare agenda.
Instead, the Budget channels resources towards social sector programmes, including education, healthcare, housing, women's welfare, and employment generation, while reiterating its broader economic vision without announcing fresh timelines or financial allocations for several flagship infrastructure projects.
