VELLORE: A 32-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal was reunited with his family on August 19 after undergoing nearly five months of treatment and rehabilitation at the Emergency Care and Recovery Centre (ECRC) functioning at the Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai, Vellore.

According to details shared by the hospital's ECRC, Babu alias Shanti Gopal Sana had been working at a restaurant in Vellore. However, due to excessive substance abuse, his mental and physical health deteriorated. In March, he was found wandering near the Old Bus Stand in torn clothes and a confused state by the ECRC team.

Based on information received from the police, Vellore ECRC project coordinator K Govindhan along with ECRC case managers M Praveen and B Priyanka approached Babu, spoke to him compassionately, and took him to the Vellore North Police Station. A CSR entry was made by the police, following which he was admitted to Vellore Government Medical College Hospital. Later, he was moved to the ECRC for continued treatment and rehabilitation.

According to ECRC officials, continuous medical care, counselling and rehabilitation activities improved his physical and mental health, enabling his reunion with his family. A police team, led by Vellore ASP Dhanush Kumar, traced his native place and residential address. With his family's consent and based on medical advice, Babu was reunited with his family in West Bengal on Wednesday in the presence of hospital dean Dr M Rohini Devi and other doctors.
