MAHBUBNAGAR: The huge inflow of water into Krishna river from upstream has brought cheer to the farmers of Mahbubnagar district. Due to the rising water level in the river, various reservoirs in the district are brimming with water.
The upstream dams like Almatti and Narayanpur in Karnataka have reached full capacity and officials there have released water to downstream Jurala barrage here.
As Jurala has received huge water inflows from Almatti and Narayanpur, officials opened 14 gates of the reservoir and released water to the downstream reservoir at Srisailam.
“The project has received 1.25 lakh cusecs of water for the first time in two years. We have released water to downstream areas in order to maintain permissible water levels at the dam,” Jurala project executive engineer Sridhar said. Power is being generated in all the six units of the Jurala hydel plant, he added.
Meanwhile, officials of the Srisailam project have released surplus water to the downstream Nagarjuna Sagar dam after generating power at the underground power plant.
Officials of Jurala project on Friday released water for agricultural crops.
Project superintendent engineer Raghunatha Rao said they decided to release water for 2016-17 Khariff season from Friday. Water is being released as per the decision taken at a meeting of the District Irrigation Advisory Committee convened by district collector TK Sridevi on July 30.
“We have decided to release water till Nov 30 for agriculture and help irrigate one lakh acres of land,” he added. The SE suggested to farmers to raise alternative crops to make optimum use of water.
