Twenty six-year-old debutante director Murali Karthick is upbeat about his upcoming venture Kalavu, starring Kalaiarasan and Karunakaran in the lead. Though he wasn't a movie buff, Dhanush’s Polladhavan (2007) inspired him to pursue filmmaking. “Films weren’t my cup of tea, but when I watched Polladhavan,
I thought I should get into cinema. Thanks to Vetrimaaran,” smiles Karthick.

He was making short films and believed that the medium would eventually fetch him a big ticket in cinema. “I learnt a lot in short films. It was all through trial-and-error method,” he adds.
Speaking about Kalavu, he says that Karunakaran is doing a serious role for the first time in his career. “It’s a crime thriller, based on incidents I read in newspapers. We have discussed a relevant issue in the film, which will interest the audience. There are two separate tracks in the story — how a murder affects the hero and his friends, and what the same does to a married couple,” he explains.
Why has he named the film Kalavu? “It’s another word for thiruttu, which means to steal. Kalavu also implies an affair between a man and a woman,” he says.
While Vignesh Rajagopalan is in charge of cinematography, Sundaramurthy has been roped in to compose music. “We shot in and around Pallavaram, and Anakaputhur; 60% of the shoot is over. We’ll be filming the rest of the portions next month,” shares Karthick.
