VILLUPURAM: In her heydey, she was a dream girl herself. Now, people near Vikrawandi are chasing her dreams.

Villagers in Thirunandhipuram near Vikrawandi are planning to dig up a piece of land near the Semaneri Andavar and Kasi Viswanathar temples in the village after actress Sukanya told them she dreamt that some idols of deities were buried under a banyan tree near the place of worship.

For digging the land up, the villagers have sought the state’s permission.

Sukanya was a popular heroine in the 1990s and acted with Kamal Haasan in Indian and Vijayakanth in Chinna Gounder.

According to sources, the temples, over a century old, are under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department. People from Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chennai and Villupuram visit the two temples regularly as they house their family deity.

Around 15 years ago, when temple repair work took place, the actress visited and said the temples housed her family deity as well. Also, she handed over an amount for the repair work and visited the temples regularly ever since.

When she visited the temples with her family recently, the village panchayat president, P Palaniammal, and others welcomed her. It was then that the actress told them she regularly gets a vision of some idols buried under the banyan tree near the temple. So, she requested the villagers to dig the land up to unearth the truth.

Following this, the panchayat president informed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department officials, who rushed to the temple and told Sukanya that she needs the permission of the Revenue Department.

Sukanya told them she would return after obtaining the permission. Meanwhile, the villagers held discussions among themselves and decided to dig. “Sukanya has been coming to the temple once a month for the past 15 years and she usually takes part in the special poojas every Friday in the Tamil month Aadi. For the past few years, Sukanya has been saying she keeps getting the vision, so we are planning to dig,” said the panchayat president. She further said the villagers too believe Sukanya’s words.

An official from Vikrawandi taluk office said that so far no one, including Sukanya, had contacted them on the issue. If the taluk officials get such a request, they will look into it and forward it to Archaeological Survey of India for permission. The official added that finally they have to obtain the Collector’s permission.

When contacted, the actress refused to speak to The Sunday Standard.
