Chennai: Getting up to speed with Gen Y’s pop cultural trends, the Tamil Nadu Election Commission is gearing up to release an official anthem ‘Vote Podu’. The song by rapper Blaaze and composer Paul Jacob is to encourage youngsters to vote in the Assembly elections scheduled for May, and features everything from reggae guitars to traditional thapattam beats for some desi flavour.

The two musicians, who came up with it in a flow-easy jam session, are pretty excited about shooting a video as well.

After interactive videos with Kollywood stars Surya, Siddharth and squash player Dipika Pallikal posted on social media to engage youngsters to vote, this move is most likely to get a ‘thumbs up’ from Gen Y, both on and offline. The high-energy chorus, which goes ‘Thann urimai kaaga vote podu, Mann urimai kaaga vote podu’ (Vote for your rights, Vote for the rights of your land) is expected to infuse a sense of patriotism among the youth, one-fourth of the voting population. “It’s a call to the younger generation to just come out and vote. This is going to shake things up,” said Blaaze. “We put it together in two hours, and were very surprised when the Election Commission contacted us,” recalls composer and lyricist Paul Jacob.
