KOCHI: While the rift between the CPI(M) and the CPI over the ‘merger meet’ held at Udayamperoor, Kerala is widening, the CPI(M) rebels who joined the CPI last week are planning to intensify the membership campaign in the coming days.

At the merger meet held at Nadakkavu near Udayamperoor, around 240 CPI(M) rebels had joined the CPI. The rebels said they were planning to hold more meetings in the coming days, as part of the membership campaign, in other areas such as Amballur, Angamaly, Chellanam and Panangad.

“Similar meetings will be convened in other areas of the district. Our aim is to unify those who were denied membership by the CPI(M) party workers, whose memberships were not renewed and inactive members who were part of any Left party in the past. Through the membership campaign, we hope to bring such persons under the CPI umbrella to give them an opportunity to be a part the progressive movement of the Left,” said  a rebel member, adding that 256 persons were given new membership at Udayamperoor and 232 at Elamkunnappuzha, following the Nadakkavu meet.
