Years of practise that seems almost like a lifetime reflects distinctly in Maitreyee Pahari’s dancing prowess. Kathak is easily the thing she’s most connected to in her life. As Nritya Katha, a dance programme that she is performing at approaches, she immerses  herself in the gripping colours of Kathak.

Kabeer, the piece she’s rendering, comes in line with other presentations such as Nayak by Rakesh Sai Babu, a Mayurbhanj Chhau dancer; Karna by kathak dancer Rita Mustaphi; and Chains, a contemporary piece by Nanda Kumar, who is also a trained Mayurbhanj Chhau dancer; “The joy of dancing together brings about an unmatched energy in all of us sharing the stage. When you match your steps with those of the others, you add rhythm to your own,” says Pahari.

It’s been organised by Lok Chhanda, an institution that has been working for the preservation and promotion of different dance forms of India. In many of its shows, you’ll see folk elements being incorporated. In bringing the styles of Kathak, chhau and contemporary together, it has once again supported the idea of upholding diversity. “To be able to dance in such an environment, is an artiste’s good fortune,” Pahari adds.
When on stage, she forgets everything. Her attention never flitters because she is most in touch with herself in that moment. As she gracefully moves, her torso displays impeccable fluidity. Her dance defines her passion. It always keeps the fire in her burning.
