Free food scheme to be extended to more villages

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district administration has decided to extend the ‘Annam Punyam’ project, aimed at providing food for the hungry, to more benificiaries in the district.‘Annam Punyam’, implemented in association with Hotel and Restaurant Association, will be introduced in more villages by Onam when the third phase of the programme is rolled out.A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held at the District Collectorate to assess the progress of the ‘Annam Punyam’ programme.

Presently, the second phase of the programme is being implemented in the district. The programme was launched in 2015 to ensure that no person in the district is left hungry due to lack of money.
Coupons for ‘Annam Punyam’ are being currently distributed from 27 village offices, 13 government hospitals, taluk offices and the district collectorate. Over 115 hotels are part of this programme.
Benificiaries can collect the coupons and have food at select hotels free of cost. 

According to representatives of Hotel and Restaurant Association, more hotels have come up expressing interest in being part of the programme.Boards have been put up at the offices where the coupons are being distributed and also at the hotels which are part of the programme.
