Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced government cars for all 234 MLAs to help them travel to their constituencies, meet people and monitor government projects.
The move has triggered a political debate in the Assembly. The DMK has rejected the offer, with Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin saying all 59 DMK MLAs will not avail themselves of the cars.
The party questioned the spending amid Tamil Nadu’s financial challenges. The ruling TVK defended the decision, saying the cars are meant to support MLAs, especially those who cannot afford vehicles.
With parties taking different positions, the issue has become a fresh political showdown in Tamil Nadu.
