Pleas against hate speeches: No legislative vacuum exists warranting intervention, says SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that existing laws are sufficient to deal with the issue of hate speeches. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said that creation of criminal offences and their punishments lie with the legislature. The bench said it would be open to the legislature's decision on whether policy measures were warranted. Petitioner Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay explained the directions laid out by the Supreme Court
