Donald Trump's official Twitter handle as President of the United States became active as soon as he was sworn in as the 45th head of State. At the same time, outgoing President Barack Obama's handle @POTUS44 was archived.

The newest President's official account already has 3.95 million followers.

Donald Trump earlier this week had said that he will continue to use his personal Twitter handle @realDonaldTrump which has 20.7 million followers. In contrast, the personal account of Barack Obama @BarackObama has 80.9 million followers.

Similarly, Melania Trump also got her official Twitter handle @FLOTUS with 8,35,000 followers, while Michelle Obama's was archived as @FLOTUS44 with 6.61 million followers.

The White House also now has an archived version of its earlier account @ObamaWhiteHouse, with the new Twitter handle.

Barack Obama began his Twitter account @POTUS in June, 2013, as Twitter was not a popular social networking site when he took office in 2008. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006.

According to the BBC, the Obama administration approached Twitter over the transition process. Twitter's spokesman said they had formulated a detailed strategy to make the transition smooth.
