With new rules such as mandatory face masks, social distancing, metro services across India resumed on Monday, after a gap of more than five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Home Ministry had last week issued guidelines, following which the metro rail services resumed across the country barring Kolkata, which has set a tentative date of September 14 to restart its operations.

However, the pandemic situation continues to be a grim one in India as the country's COVID-19 caseload crossed 42 lakh mark on Monday with a spike of 90,802 new cases and 1,016 deaths in last 24 hours.

The total case tally stands at 42,04,614 including 8,82,542 active cases, 32,50,429 cured/discharged/migrated & 71,642 deaths, as per the latest Ministry of Health data.

Pune records 4,273 cases

Pune district reported 4,273 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking its count to 1,97,286 on Monday, a health official said. He said the death toll reached 4,651 with 76 more patients succumbing to the infection.

Sikkim reports 29 new cases

Twenty-nine more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Sikkim, taking the state's tally to 1,940, an official said on Monday. Of the fresh cases, 18 were reported from East Sikkim and 11 from West Sikkim districts, state Information, Education and Communication officer Sonam Bhutia said.

Surat district reports 286 new cases

Surat reported 286 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the highest for a district in Gujarat, taking its tally to 22,893, the state health department said. With six fatalities, the death toll rose to 900, it said. Both Surat city and the rural parts of the district reported over 100 new cases.

Nagaland reports 173 recoveries

This took the total number of people who have been cured of the disease in Nagaland to 3,674, a health department official said. The recovery rate of Nagaland also improved to 87.06 per cent from 83.80 per cent on Sunday.

Stating that the testing capacity has crossed over 1.50 lakh per day in the state, CM Nitish Kumar said that 11,350 RT-PCR tests are being done on a daily basis at present which the government intends to increase to 20,000 a day.

Three more persons died from the novel coronavirus in Chandigarh, pushing the toll to 74 while 232 fresh cases raised the infection tally to 5,995 on Monday, according to a medical bulletin. Among the new fatalities was a 72-year-old woman who succumbed to the contagion at a Mohali hospital on Monday, the bulletin said.

Delhi-Ghaziabad Metro services to resume on Thursday

The Metro services will resume between Delhi and Ghaziabad on Thursday after a gap of over five months. The services were halted on March 22 on the directions of the Union government. District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey said on the first two days, the Metro will ply from 6 am to 11 am and 4 to 11 pm.

Haryana on Monday reported 23 more deaths due to coronavirus as another big spike of 2,224 cases pushed the infection count in the state to 78,773. The state had on Sunday reported the highest single-day COVID-19 toll of 25 deaths, and on Saturday a record 2,289 cases.

Gujarat's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,05,671 with 1,330 new cases reported on Monday, the state health department said. With 15 more deaths, the COVID-19 fatalities in the state increased to 3,123, it said.

Jharkhand reports 1,250 fresh cases

Jharkhand reported eight more COVID-19 fatalities, pushing the death toll in the state to 470, even as the tally mounted to 51,067 with 1,250 fresh cases, a health department bulletin said on Monday. The deaths were reported from East Singhbhum (4), Ranchi (3) and Sahibganj (1), it said.

UP's Muzaffarnagar recorded 107 fresh coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the total number of active cases in the district to 912, an official said. The fresh cases include 10 inmates of a jail, seven policemen and five government officials, District Magistrate Selvakumari J said.

The COVID-19 tally in Ahmedabad district rose to 32,696 on Monday with addition of 172 new cases, Gujarat health department said. With three persons succumbing to the infection, the toll went up to 1,753, it said. A total of 81 patients were discharged in the day, raising the number of recoveries to 26,929, the department said.

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday expressed happiness over restart of Metro train services in the city, saying there should be no negligence in following precautions against COVID-19.

  • The first line to be opened was the Yellow Line connecting Samaypur Badli and HUDA city centre in Gurgaon.

    A total of 145 police personnel deployed in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar have tested positive for COVID-19 and 75 per cent of them have recovered, officials said on Sunday. Also, 34 police personnel are currently undergoing treatment for the novel coronavirus, which has claimed the life of one of their colleagues in the district, the officials said.

    The COVID-19 recovery rate in Bihar rose to 88.24 per cent on Sunday after 1,924 more people were cured of the disease, the health department said in a bulletin. The recovery rate was 88.01 per cent on Saturday.

    The COVID-19 tally in Surat rose to 22,605 on Sunday with the addition of 295 cases, which is the highest single-day spike for any district in Gujarat on the day, the health department said.     Gujarat on Sunday reported the highest single-day spike of 1,335 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count of infections in the state to 1,04,341, health department said. The cumulative death toll went up to 3,108 with 14 people succumbing to the infection, including five in Surat, it said.

    The Punjab Police is providing free health kits with a pulse oximeter, sanitisers and medicines to the infected policemen, it said.
