Ringing bells, the Noida based company which promised a smartphone for Rs 251 claimed that it will start delivering the phones from June 28.
"We will start shipment of Freedom251 from June 28 to customers who paid for it earlier on COD (cash-on-delivery) basis," said company's Director Mohit Goel.
Ringing bells, an Indian smartphone company launched in 2015, created headlines by claiming to launch the world's cheapest smartphone. It even took online bookings from customers for the same. The company's website crashed due to the overwhelming response from prospective buyers during the two day sale.
According to the company about 30,000 people paid for booking the phone and over 7 crore people registered for it. But the company refunded the payments following a close scrutiny by government agencies.
Several fingers were raised against the credentials of the company and its claims. Media reports alleged they were given a smartphone from another manufacturer Adcom, with the latter's logo masked with a whitener for preview of the product.
Several industry players also expressed doubt over the company's claims. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad too had asked the Department of Electronics and IT to look into the matter. The company had also come under the scanner of Excise and Income Tax Departments amid debate over the feasibility of a 3G-enabled handset for Rs 251.
