BENGALURU: India’s tech hiring market opened the new fiscal year on a weaker note, as active job openings fell 8%month on month in April 2026, according to Xpheno’s Active Tech Jobs Outlook India April 2026.

The report said active tech openings stood at 110,000 in April, reversing the gains seen in 2026 and bringing demand back close to February levels. “Indian Tech sector’s active talent demand has dropped by 8% compared to the previous month, to have a moderated start to the new Fiscal 2027,” the report said.

Describing the shift, the report noted that “April 2026 is set to roll back and reverse the gains in tech demand seen since January 2026.” It added that March had now emerged as the strongest month of FY2026 for active tech demand.

Despite the monthly decline, the report noted that April’s active tech demand was still overall 7% higher than a year earlier.

Xpheno’s report also pointed to wider uncertainty around the market. “While it's early to attribute the drop to escalating global geopolitical situation, it would be right to expect a near-term impact on hiring funnels,” it said.

Full-time roles continued to dominate the market, accounting for 85,000 openings, or 77% of the total, though these too fell 3% from March. Contract roles dropped 17% to 5,000, while internships and part-time openings rose 67% on a low base to 1,500.

Among job levels, mid-senior roles accounted for the largest share, with 59,000 openings, even as they declined 6% month-on-month. Entry-level openings remained flat at 15,000.

By sector, IT services remained the largest consumer of talent, with 43,000 openings, despite a 7% monthly decline. Demand from global capability centres dropped more sharply, down 21% to 15,000.

Bengaluru remained the leading hiring market with 26,000 openings, followed by Hyderabad at 10,000 and Delhi NCR at 9,000. The report added that 62% of active demand remained concentrated in major cities, though hiring in these locations fell 11% from the previous month.
