NEW DELHI: Giving in to the demands of Anganwadi workers, the Centre on Monday announced doubling of remuneration for Anganwadi workers and helpers.

Presenting the Union Budget, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced

an increase in the remuneration of Anganwadi workers from `1,500 per month to `3,000 per month and for Anganwadi helpers from `750 per month to `1,500 per month from April 1, 2011. Around 22 lakh Anganwadi

workers and helpers would benefit from the increase.

Though the income tax exemption limit for women stays unchanged at `1,90,000 per annum, Mukherjee said that he has covered women in other

sectors.

As part of initiatives for the fair sex, Mukherjee proposed an allocation of `12,733 crore for the Women and Child Development Ministry, an increase of 15 per cent over the last year’s budget of `11,070.5 crore.
