BANGALORE: A sudden fire broke out at the Cauvery Emporium, an art and Handicrafts showroom on M G Road. As the store was closed on Tuesday, no casualties were reported.
Passersby observed smoke coming from the building around 8:30 pm and informed the police. About 10 fire tenders doused the fire by 9.45 pm. A fire personnel said that the fire could have originated from the first floor of the building were textile materials are stored. The fire had not spread on to the lower floor where wooden, sandal wood and ivory articles.
A short circuit is suspected to be the reason behind the fire.
DGP Fire and Emergency, Jija Hari Singh also visited the spot and investigated the accident. “The shop was closed as stock verification was in progress. We are still not sure how much material was gutted in the fire and the total worth of the loss is hard to estimate,” the Karnataka State Handicrafts MD said.
He added that experts from the electrical department are investigating the incident.
Soon after the accident, a traffic diversion put people travelling down MG Road and Brigade Road in some trouble.
Vehicles were stopped from entering in to Brigade road and MG Road from all the connecting roads.
Traffic Police Inspector from Cubbon Park said, “As it was not a weekend, traffic was not that dense. However diverting the road users from this junction is difficult.” Chaos continued till 10 pm, around MG Road.
